The Adventure of the Devil's Foot
The dangerous test uncovered the facts of the mysterious case. All of the dead died of the poisonous fumes they breathed in. That was why there was fire lit at the sites of murder. The difference was that the fire was in the fireplace in the former case. Some of the poisonous fumes went out through the chimney. Thus Mr. Tregennis' two brothers escaped from death by sheer luck. At speaking so, Holmes threw the lamp for the experiment into the bushes.
At the moment, Leon Sterndale showed up in front of them. It was an appointment scheduled by Holmes in advance. Holmes told this explorer that he had something to do with Mr. Tregennis' death. The explorer got enraged, almost rushed to hit somebody with his fist. Holmes said calmly, "The conclusion I drew is not to hurt you but just for the sake of the case. Otherwise I would have made you see the police instead of me. I hope you will be frank to me." Suddenly, Sterndale pulled a picture out of his pocket, his face turned pale, and uttered, "It's all for her!"
This explorer sobbed and stated how it all happened.
